This is a charming hand-carved vintage (c. 1960s) Dogon medicine box, also known as a pharmacopoeia box or cabinet, from Mali. The box is in superb, undamaged condition with no issues.
These medicine boxes were traditionally used by shamans and traditional healers of the Dogon people to store medicinal and magical herbs, roots, and spices.
The box stands on three legs, two at the front and one at the back, and has the heads of two ancestral figures at the top. As usual with Dogon artifacts, the piece is ornately decorated. On the back there is an elongated carving of a crocodile.
